Every year, more than 500 million metric tonnes of cereals and grains, valued at around US$156 billion, move across over 140 exporting countries to close to 200 countries worldwide. This vast trade network connects thousands of grain trade stakeholders, supports millions of farmers, and helps feed billions of consumers.

The conflict in the Middle East has sparked concerns about risks to agricultural supply chains, particularly related to rising fertiliser costs and higher fuel prices. The Strait of Hormuz, the waterway linking the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, serves as the maritime exit point for approximately 25% of the world’s oil supply and 20% of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. The region is also a major hub for fertiliser production and trade, accounting for as much as 35% of global urea exports and up to 30% of ammonia shipments.

Meeting of the International Grains Council

Members of the International Grains Council (IGC) convened for the 63rd Council Session on 21 January 2026 in London. The meeting was chaired by Dr Amy Little, Counsellor (Agriculture), Australian High Commission to the United Kingdom. In conjunction with the 63rd Session, IGC and Australia coorganised a Grains Forum titled Aligning Rules and Innovation: Navigating Regulatory Barriers and Gene-Editing in Global Grain Trade, held on Tuesday 20th January 2026.

Dr Amy Little appointed Chairperson of the International Grains Council for 2025/26

Following on from Algeria’s Chairmanship, the IGC has appointed Dr. Amy Little, Counsellor for Agriculture, High Commission of Australia to the UK, as Chairperson for 2025/26.
