The first day focused on the main drivers to cope with volatility in global commodity markets: sustainability versus food security, trade finance tools, digitalisation of grains trade.
The dialogue between producing and importing countries was a success with 12 delegations and 4 international organisations participating to share their views. The private sector held a session on the role of trading companies when facing global challenges. The outcome document of the discussions is being used to publicise the 2024 IGC Grains conference.
With the support of the delegation of Japan, the lunch at the conference was the same as the lunch served to the G7 members during their meeting in Hiroshima (May 2023). The declaration of Hiroshima includes a reference to the IGC Grains conference and the dialogue between producers and importers. The objective of serving the Japanese cuisine was also to highlight the diversity of food culture and therefore the diversity of food security.
The second day addressed market developments in wheat flour, soybeans (Brazil’s bumper harvest), maize (feed demand), rice (North American perspective) and the Northern Hemisphere harvest prospects in 2023.
Five side-events addressed commodity specific issues, including glyphosate, millet production and trade, rice productivity in Africa, sustainability in the supply chain and the setting of an early warning system for Mediterranean countries.
The conference format provided an opportunity to set up 7 partnership agreements representing all operators in the grains value chain: USSEC, USGC, Bayer, IGTC, Euronext, Corteva and Glyphosate.
